Low Vision Services in Queensland

A guide for optometrists & ophthalmologists
Martin Hodgson BSc (Hons)

The Vision Impaired Person (VIP) will often benefit significantly from simple advice and referral to specialist low vision services. Optometrists and ophthalmologists are in an ideal position to provide such advice and referral for their vision impaired patients.

This site is intended as a compendium of available services in Queensland but also includes suggestions for simple procedures and guidance that may be provided by any eye care professional. It is heartening for both patient and practitioner when a consultation ends with a little helpful advice and positive action.

What Can You Do Beyond the +3.00 Add?

Some eye care practitioners may lack confidence when dealing with low vision patients. Often, however the primary requirement of the VIP is simply sufficient time and patience from the practitioner to achieve a thorough assessment of their residual vision. Once this has been done an appropriate plan of action can be designed to achieve the patient’s goals.
